Popping my marathon cherry early!

I’m cheating on Disney and losing my marathon virginity to a one-week stand with the X-Country Marathon this Sunday.

Yes, I signed  up for a marathon four days before the race and I love it!

xmar Last week when I agreed to run a 10K less than 12 hours before it began, I told David I wished it was a full marathon. I totally believed I could handle the 26.2.

It all began with a blast email I received last night. “6th Annual X-Country Marathon, 30K, Half-Marathon & 5K  THIS Sunday, November 22, 2009” stared back at me at my screen. An hour later I had signed up to run the full!

I’ve always been very dangerous with my spontaneity. It’s like a drug!!!!

I think a big spotlight should go to Ryan. This crazy lady volunteered to wake up at an ungodly hour Sunday morning, make the two hour trek to the marathon, wait for me to run and ride back with me. Ryan definitely wins the best-friend-ever award! I’m so excited to have her supporting me for this fun adventure!!

People have (and will) tell me that I’m not ready for this, that I’ll injure myself or that it can hurt my training for the big marathon (Disney). I’d disagree with it all!

My training has been strong. I’ve had no injuries and I’ve listened to my body well. I've gotten to 20 miles and it was almost effortless. Although 26.2 is different than 20, I don’t think it’ll be THAT big since my 20 went so well. I also don’t think I will have to take much time off from running afterward. I’m treating this as a longer training run. I don’t think there is anything special about the number 26.2 that will cause me to automatically be injured, you know?

I haven’t mentioned this on the blog yet, but my running goals go beyond 26.2. After the marathon (this or Disney) I will continue to increase my mileage until my body tells me to stop. There’s nothing that says 26.2 has to be everyone’s max so I’m going to have fun finding (and pushing!) mine! So since 26.2 is more of a means than an end, I’m not getting too worked up about it :)

Actually, I’m nervous because I am not scared at all about the marathon! I’m as calm as a clam!

Have you ever spontaneously signed up for a race? Any last-minute taper tips?
