Trashy

You know that old technique of destroying a food so you are guaranteed to not eat it? I use the trick often. Want to make sure you don't eat the other half? In the trash it goes. Swear you will not eat that cookie? Spray a little bleach on it. It works.

.. unless I dig in the trash can and eat the other
half of my bar!

____________________________________________

When presented with food experiences outside of my little comfort zone, I take the opportunity to shift blame. Dinner out with my family? I just have to eat a ton. Extra food at work? Even when I'm not hungry and don't like the food, I just have to eat it because it's there. David orders pizza and bread sticks for dinner? Of course my boyfriend's unhealthy habits just have to rub off on me. The day is already ruined- why not have another bowl?

This is not true. Contrary to what I want to believe, I am not helpless.

This is all a choice. My choice. I feel like crap today not because I have a lot on my plate right now. The way I feel is a result of me making huge excuses and basing my decisions off of that.

Last night I went to The Lime with some friends. They brought out chips and salsa to start. Obviously I did not need to eat a ton of them. But, I did. Because that's what you do when you're out with friends and there's free food in front of you?

No. It was my choice. It is my choice still.

Sorry guys. I needed to expose myself.

;)

hey guys!!

So everything is crazy right now. Work is taking me all over the place so I'm in and out of town often. My last semester at the University of South Florida begins later in August. I'm also working on playing catch up with seeing my friends.

My health? Eh.

I'm in constant pain. TMJ- more on that later. Exercise is non-existent. Food is not so good. I really believe the ball is either rolling or stopped. Right now it's not moving, but I'm trying- so many things keep getting in the way! But tomorrow is a new day!

(Why do these "quick" posts get so long???)

The reason I wrote this post was to leave you with a great quote. How about we all slow down and be gentle people for a while? I know I need the reminder every once in a while.

"Make a practice to judge persons and things in the most favorable light at all times, in all circumstances." - St. Vincent de Paul

Movie Review: Dark Knight

Per the fabulous MizFit's request, here is my review of the Dark Knight. I usually don't like to do movie reviews, because I'm easy to please when it comes to movies. I have to be entertained and the acting must be believable. Well, the Dark Knight fit the bill!

This movie grabs your attention from the start and doesn't let go. There is an intense story line with tons of twists and turns. Nothing is expected. The characters cover emotions that are easy to relate to, so I became quite impassioned during certain scenes!

I'm not good dealing with scary movies, but this one was just fine. It is scary, but not the "nightmare" kind of scary. I can't explain that one too much. Still, don't bring the kids.

The effects were out of this world. Every bit was up to par.

Overall: A+
Yes, it is amazing! The Batman voice is super annoying, but other than that this movie takes the prize. It covers humor, love, jealousy, action, greed and so many aspects of real life. You will love it.

Friday Quickie

Considering the 12 page paper I have due in, oh... 3 hours, we're going to make this quick! Just a few things:

*Buy 1 smoothie get 1 FREE? Oh yes! Sign up for an email newsletter with the following links to score this sweet deal for Jamba Juice and Smoothie King!

*I am addicted to running. Seriously, I want to do nothing else other than run. Rain, shine, busy street, whatever! I can run on Bayshore by the water and then into the city with high-rises and historic buildings and back home! At night I stretch thinking of my run and during the day I plan it on mapmyrun.com. Too addicting. Just the other day I ran 4 miles. My next goal is 6! I have it all mapped out! :)

*An added motivation to stay addicted to running is the scale going down! Every day for the past 5 days it has gone down .2 pounds! Some days my eating has been really heavy (too many of those stupid cookies we talked about, the best huge grilled cheese sandwiches), but I work really hard on my run and viola! The scale and I have a nice little thing going on. I really didn't want to speak it- it can't be jinxed!

*Tonight, stretch before bed. Or turn up your favorite song and dance for 5 minutes. Chase the dog down the hall. I promise you will feel great!

* I am going to this tomorrow! And to see this tonight!

Bye! :)

Running Additions

When I run, I look like I'm chasing someone who stole my purse but left me with all the contents. I've talked before about my safety concerns when I run. And I run better with music to match my beat. As a result, I carry a load through every run. In my hands you will see: Blackberry, very large iPod, keys and pepper spray. Yes, I do look like a mad woman as I pant my way down the street. However, since I am ever so anxious to leave my "almost-runner" status in the smoke, I've turned to some new gear.

Here's a post to fill you in on some of my healthy ashley purchases for running, weight and mind maintenance. (Please excuse the low, low quality photos. I forgot to pack my sturdy USB cord for my actual camera.)

1) First off, my Tanita scale. Yes, it is amazing. I hope the number (slightly) shifting downward isn't just a defect! I'm not sure of which one I bought, but I love it. I don't know how to operate it, but it is so cool!

2) After POM's rave reviews, I bought myself a pair of Brooks running shorts. Oh my, they are fantastic! I'm wearing them right now. They don't bunch or stick or get all sweaty. Every part of the shorts is flattering, comfortable and amazing. As a result, I became a perfect runner.

3) This little beauty came today! No longer could I lug my big iPod everywhere. Whether I was dropping the Blackberry or the iPod at Mile 3, it was not good. I found a refurbished, newest generation iPod Shuffle through the Apple store for $40.00 with free shipping. It came today and I can't see any sign that anyone used this. Maybe they just reused the inside parts? It was in a fancy schmancy box and everything. The sound quality was great and it is so small that I kept forgetting I was wearing it!

In running news, I ran 4 miles in the city of Tampa in the rain today with my new gear. Running down the old streets with high-rises and character at every turn reminds me why I love my new apartment!

--What objects do you need for running, weight loss/maintenance, to get trough the day, etc.? Since many of my items were the results of recommendations, I'd love to hear from you!--

Review: Annies Shells & Real Aged Cheddar

After seeing it all over Whole Foods and other blogs, I finally bought myself a box of Annie's Shells & Real Aged Cheddar. Here's my humble review!:

Nutritionals: Surprisingly, the nutritional info isn't too different from our Kraft blue box. Annies only requires you to add milk, but Kraft calls for butter and milk... which leaves Kraft's "Prepared" calories at 410 (Annie's is 280).

The ingredient list is like another world compared to Kraft. With organic wheat shell pasta and a much shorter list, Annie's ingredients puts Kraft to shame!

Taste: It tasted just like Kraft's mac-n-cheese.. just a lot less fake! The noodles didn't taste like wheat and the cheese actually tasted like a cheddar cheese sauce. This dish didn't taste "healthy." It was sooooooooo tasty. I ate a bunch of it and didn't feel like I just swallowed a chemical plant.

Usability: This could be a side dish or a main meal with a few simple additions. I see this goodness and picture all of the mix-ins you could use. I made myself a big bowl with some frozen peas mixed in and drizzles of organic ketchup on top. You could also add broccoli, tuna.. you get the idea!

Other: Annie's box is mader from 100% recycled paper fiber. They also use renewable energy. That rocks!

Overall: Annie's Shells & Real Aged Cheddar is a fun, healthy food. This is great for people who want a yummy comfort food without paying for it in bad ingredients and tons of fat. I say EAT IT!... just maybe not every day!

** After writing this post I went to Target and stocked up. I'm serving a big box with peas mixed in and veggie burgers on the side for dinner Friday! Yumm!

Vanishing, Vanishing.. GONE!

In the past two weeks, I...

Moved into my new apartment $$$
Stock apartment $

Had my car towed $

My car flooded $$

Still don't have my car.. other forms of transportation $

Lost track of funds, Wachovia's outrageous fees $$$

Dentist today, root canal tomorrow $$$

I know I am blessed. In all of this, I still have family and friends who love me, a great job that is flexible and pays me well, etc. However, it is very tough to have so much money taken in such a short time. It can be overwhelming, actually. Money is just a material thing, but it is vital when I put in 40 plus hours a week for it and it puts food on the table. I don't like when it goes from good to blank. Still, it's a great time to make sure my values are on focus.

After finding out about my latest expense and newest pain (dental), I felt helpless. So I ate all of the junk food I could get my hands on: cereal, cookies, almonds. Terrible.

So I get my first root canal tomorrow. Tell me- just how bad are they?

On a parting note, here is my romantic photo message I sent to David tonight (when I should be writing papers for my summer class)-
This is titled: "Beach... is that way." Niceeeeee..

Better Than Ice Cream?

It's officially summer. Here in Tampa we are hitting the high 90's on an everyday basis. Every afternoon I crave something creamy and refreshing. I just need something to hit the spot. You know- something cool, creamy, sweet, refreshing.. and healthy?

Here is a (growing!) list of some healthy options to turn to when the heat is on! I've combined a few reviews of products I've tried recently in the list.

- Frozen banana w/ smear of PB and cinnamon (peel, slice in half and places bananas in plastic bag in freezer- great pre-workout snack!)
- Club soda with a slice of lime/orange/lemon
- Fage/Oikos w/ blob of fruit preserves
- Fruit smoothie w/ peach, yogurt, ice and splash of milk or juice! (Speaking of smoothies...Just tried Smoothie King's Angel Food today! Perfect!)
- Blended iced coffee w/ 1/2 frozen banana
- 100 cal. Slim-A-Bear Ice Cream Bars (I just tried a box of these. They are a good size and taste exactly like the regular sandwiches! Yum!)
- Handful of frozen peas (seriously addicting)

Please leave your yummy heat-relievers in the comments! Enjoy!

Neverending Belly Dilemma

I have a big problem and I need your help. Here's the lowdown:

At work I've taken on an intern for the summer. (Wooohoo!) He is great. He is hard-working, smart, willing to put in long hours... and constantly eats. Since our offices are right next to each other, with the kitchen on the middle/side, his snacking becomes a colleague event. Regardless of my plans or intentions, I end up consuming countless cookies when he is here. The cookies make me feel gross, which leads to me being less productive.. and less of a healthy, happy ashley when home in my new apartment!

But I can't seem to stop. I've tried lecturing myself, allowing one or two, writing down my food for the day, replacing with other snacks... but nothing works! And the cookies are gross! They are something like 40 little cookies for $1.50. And 50 calories each. Not to mention the popcorn crunch we opened today. All of this really adds up.

I hate not feeling good. Please help. Advice? Lectures? I NEED INTERVENTION NOW!!!!

Picture(s) of the Day!

Look closely :)

Woah Boy!

Has it really been this long? How have you all been!?

Monday after work I moved into my apartment, Tuesday-Thursday I was away for work, Friday I got my car towed, Saturday I moved the big things into my new place and Sunday my car got flooded. It has been one fun, expensive week!

The new apartment is just perfect. I now have this uplifting environment that allows/challenges me to be whoever I want to be. Before I was so influenced by commuting 2.5 hours each day, my family troubles, my sibling’s poor eating habits… they were all tumbling against me to keep me down. I was binging often the past few weeks, I had cake every day before breakfast and after dinner, and I was so stressed out and tired by the time I got home from work at 7:30 p.m. that I just couldn’t work out. I was feeling terrible.

The first week after my move I hadn’t counted a calorie or stepped on the scale- or even had much time to exercise! But from being in this environment and wanting to just be healthy, I stepped on the scale and my weight had dropped down 3 pounds. I just know this apartment is good for me.
(my first time in the apartment!)
(a sneak peak! pictures to come!)

(first broken plate!)
One thing my landlord failed to mention to me was that my street floods easily. (oops!) This building has street parking as well as lots in the back and on the sides. I always park in the street because it is closest to my apartment. Last night (after hail larger than ice cubes), David looked at the window and said, “Look- my car is under water.” Well, it turns out mine was too.
The street was a river. Water was on my seats. Notice the water bottle floating in the picture below. Water even came 6 steps up to the first floor of my building. Fun! Both of our cars were towed and we’re waiting for the diagnosis from the shop. I’ll keep you posted.

There has been a very limited internet connection at the apartment. I’m working on it, but I’m getting something now, so hold on! Check back soon, because we have a lot to talk about! (And lots of pictures!)

I have so many things I want to discuss with you all through this blog... I’m getting right on it!
Have a healthy, happy day!

New Cheese Arrivals-07/05/08

Strong Cheese Week

In conjuction with our strong beer month we bring you some of the most pungent wash rind cheeses on the market:

Winnimere- Raw cow's milk cheese washed with lambic beer and then wrapped in spruce bark. This is a beautiful triple creme cheese with a woodsy flavor and a slightly sour finish from the beer.

Mont St. Francis- Raw goat's milk wash rind cheese. Nice ruby red rind, cheese is rich, beefy, and deliciously aromatic. This cheese was one of the first great washed rinds in America.

Morbier-Is smooth, silky, supple, and happily smelly. Proudly sporting a sticky washed and brushed rind, the raw cow milk cheese is aged for four months to result in a sweet cheese with a buttery pungency and a line of ash in the center

Sir Francis Drake- Very limited release from cow girl creamery. Soft and creamy cow's milk wash rind cheese that is probably the mildest of the bunch. Spreadable texture with a mildly sweet berry flavor from the currant skins the cheese is wrapped in.
